Apostrophe Newsletter                 April 10, 2013
Hello Everyone!

This weekend brings more great authors to Apostrophe Books for Local Author Open Table Sundays. Come by to support our local authors, pick up signed copies of their books and speak with them about their work. Entertaining, interesting, and what a great gift for that visiting relative or a friend in need of inspiration!  See information below.
April is National Poetry month. Celebrate your favorites from Dickinson and Frost to Oliver and Muldoon. Have a poetry party, read from your faves, give a poem to a friend. Come check out our lovely poetry section. Fancy yourself a poet? We have books on writing, too.

Next weekend we are proud to be your bookseller for a talk by Dr. Wendy Mogel, author of  The Blessing of a Skinned Knee, at Temple Israel on Sunday, April 21st. Later this month join us for an Earth Day celebration with The Story Book Fairy. She will regale the children with stories then lead the group in crafting mini greenhouses. Scroll for details.
Below you will find pictures from our events last weekend.  We had a blast with delightful author Michael Muller and Mirabelle the Boston Terrier on Friday evening.  The kids enjoyed making rainbow hats with the Story Book Fairy on Saturday. Then Local Author Open Table Sundays brought folks out to meet and greet our local authors.
As you have probably noticed, subscribers to this newsletter have begun receiving a great new e-publication, Shelf Awareness for Readers, which includes reviews, books launched during the week, insider information about the bookselling business, and fascinating features for avid readers. We hope you enjoy it! Comments, questions, concerns? We love feedback.  Email us at  Apostrophebooks@verizon.net.
Books! All discounted all the time at Apostrophe Books, your local independent bookstore. If we don't have the book you need we can order it for you and have it in the store usually within 48 hours, with no shipping charges whatsoever! Furthermore we have a fantastic selection of cards and delightful wrapping available!

Happy reading!

Sincerely,
Lisa, Valerie Kelsey, Michelle, Sara, Jen and cheenie

April is National Poetry Month

Poet's Obligation
To whoever is not listening to the sea
this Friday morning, to whoever is cooped up

in house or office, factory or woman
or street or mine or harsh prison cell;
to him I come, and, without speaking or looking,
I arrive and open the door of his prison,
and a vibration starts up, vague and insistent,
a great fragment of thunder sets in motion
the rumble of the planet and the foam,
the raucous rivers of the ocean flood,
the star vibrates swiftly in its corona,
and the sea is beating, dying and continuing.

So, drawn on by my destiny,
I ceaselessly must listen to and keep
the sea's lamenting in my awareness,
I must feel the crash of the hard water
and gather it up in a perpetual cup
so that, wherever those in prison may be,
wherever they suffer the autumn's castigation,
I may be there with an errant wave,
I may move, passing through windows,
and hearing me, eyes will glance upward
saying 'How can I reach the sea?'
And I shall broadcast, saying nothing,
the starry echoes of the wave,
a breaking up of foam and quicksand,
a rustling of salt withdrawing,
the grey cry of the sea-birds on the coast.

So, through me, freedom and the sea
will make their answer to the shuttered heart.

"To be a champion, you must have no ego at all. You must not exist as a separate entity. You must give yourself over to the race. You are nothing if not for your team, your car, your shoes, your tires. Do not mistake confidence and self-awareness for egotism."

No Words Necessary
Margaret Ordoubadian, now retired after having taught Children's Literature for over thirty years at Middle Tennessee State University, was visiting this coast recently. As we sat around talking about books, I handed her a few of my recent faves. Upon perusing Arthur Geisert's delightful pig tale and sequel to IceThe Giant Seed, we ended up on the subject of wordless books, which I adore, and the value of picture books with older children. The Surprise
by Sylvia van Ommen is another of my favorite sweet and fun wordless books for all ages, the story of a sheep who shears herself to make a sweater for a friend. Margaret didn't know it, but she mentioned Changes, Changes, a colorful classic by Pat Hutchins, A Boy, A Dog, and a Frog, by Mercer Mayer (and it's the first in a series), and I remembered Tuesday by David Wiesner (almost wordless), a book my son enjoyed. Wordless books really help teach a child to read as they follow a sequence of events creating a story visually, allowing the child to articulate the tale.

                 Margaret said, "For a child to learn to read well the child needs to be able to recognize sequencing in character development and plot development, and wordless books achieve this for the pre-reader. Then when the child tells the story to the adult it helps the child's reasoning ability because the child is forming sentences that rely on cause and effect, one thing leading to another.
The adult can also prompt with why, allowing the child to probe the subject in an open-ended discussion."  Thus is visual literacy developed. Margaret mentioned Peter Spier's Noah's Ark as a particularly good book for just this purpose. "The child can follow the story and get many many details in a panel, and you see the ark from way above and from the inside.  It's very cinematic and a wonderful book for a child to "read" to her parent. There's an English translation of an old Dutch poem in the beginning that can be read to the child.  Then the child's imagination can carry him forward to tell the story with maybe a few promptings."  Wordless books are best used one on one (or maybe two) to achieve the full benefits of the adult/child interaction. In fact, even with older kids picture books can lead to powerful skill building. Chris Van Allsburg's The Mysteries of Harris Burdick and Peter Sis' The Wall
are two books that Margaret mentioned reading together with older children to stimulate their imaginations and to facilitate the development of visual literacy.
Margaret's genre of choice is fairy tales, and she thinks Bettelheim's The Uses of Enchantment is a significant book for parents who want to explore the impact of stories on the healthy development of their children. The Call of Stories, by Robert Coles, is another resource for parents and adults working with books and children. She also recommends Sur La Lune Fairy Tale Pages, a website where these concepts are fully explored.

We have a lively section of wordless picture books in the store, and they are all at least 10% off!  Come over and spend a few minutes back in your childhood as you prepare to help the little ones in your life with reading.  -cheenie

Meet Your Apostrophe Booksellers

Your Apostrophe Booksellers!
name?  Kelsey

how long with apostrophe books?  almost 6 years

previous bookselling experience? education?  hobbies?
My first job was at Vroman's Bookstore in Pasadena right out of high school for 3 years. Then I went to work as a 3rd grade teacher's aide, and now I do both bookselling and teacher's aiding.  I went to school at Pasadena City College for approximately 1 billion years and now I'm finally finishing my B.S. in Communication with Arizona State (online obviously, since it's pretty hard to get to Arizona and work in Long Beach).  I don't have much extra time for hobbies, obviously I like to read.  I also like to cook and watch excessive amounts of tv.

what do you enjoy most about your job at apostrophe books?
My favorite part about working at Apostrophe is the visual merchandising.  I like setting up new displays and trying to make them look really fun and interesting.  I also like that I get to talk to a bunch of new people every day and getting to know those customers that become regulars.

favorite authors?  titles?  favorite book to recommend to adults?  children?
One of my favorites is The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls for adults.  It's super interesting and intense.  I generally enjoy funny memoirs more than just about anything else, Bossypants by Tina Fey, Lets Pretend this Never Happened by Jenny Lawson, The Bedwetter by Sara Silverman. Fiction-wise I really liked The Paris Wife by Paula McLain and just about everything I've read by Michael Connelly has been a great read.
For kids you can't go wrong with Shel Silverstein.  I have all of his books and I'm not exaggerating when I say that I've read each of them probably 100 times.  Another absolute favorite for little kids is The Monster at the End of this Book! staring Lovable, Furry Old Grover.
For a little bit older readers Harry Potter is awesome!  It's something I tell my 3rd graders that if they want to read it now they can, but they have to promise they'll read it again when they're teenagers or even adults.  There's just so much you'll get out of it when you're older that you just don't see when you're 8.  But it's really fun when you're 8 anyway.  Along those lines when you finish reading Harry Potter a really fun series to move on to is The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flammel by Michael Scott, another fantasy series full of adventure, mythology, and history.

something interesting or extraordinary about you?
I'm super good at trivia.  I think it's because I like to read and learn new stuff all the time and it just sticks with me.
can we put your picture in the newsletter?  as long as it's a good one.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
name?  Jen
how long with apostrophe books?  almost 3 weeks, haha
previous bookselling experience?  education?  hobbies?
I was a bookseller at Borders Books for almost 6 years.  I was hired at my home store in Hawaii in 2005, relocated to California in 2009, and have since worked in several other Borders stores, including Long Beach, Rolling Hills and La Habra.  I have my Associate in Arts degree from Leeward Community College and am planning to continue my education at a school for Holistic Nutrition.
what do you enjoy most about your job at apostrophe books?
What I enjoy about this job is the face-to-face interaction I get to have with the customers that come in.  That's the beauty of independently owned businesses - we get to personally hand you the item you want and share a conversation, get to know you and the other people in our community a little better.
favorite authors?  titles?  favorite book to recommend to adults?  children?
I have such a hard time choosing favorites of anything, but a few authors that I particularly enjoy are Chuck Palahniuk, Miranda July, and Amy Hempel.  The book I usually recommend to people who enjoy fiction is No One Belongs Here More Than You by Miranda July.  It's a book of quirky/eclectic short stories and a really quick read.  As for children's books I'd have to go with the Pigeon books by Mo Willems, they're all just too cute.
something interesting or extraordinary about you?
When I'm not at Apostrophe Books or my other day job, I can most likely be found in my tiny Long Beach kitchen baking up sweet treats for my pastry business, PBJ - Pastries By Jen.  I also keep a food blog at TheCaffeinatedKitchen.blogspot.com.  For those interested in trying some of my baked creations they can be found at Lord Windsor Roasters in Long Beach.
can we put your picture in the newsletter?  sure :)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HI!
My name is Michelle Sears and I've worked at Apostrophe Books two years this May.
I also worked at Borders for many years before working here.
I  studied at LBCC and CSULB- Studio Art Major with an emphasis in Drawing and Painting :)
A few of my  favorite hobbies include anything and all things artsy, reading, cooking, and spending time with my little dog Rufus who has a BIG personality.
I enjoy working at Apostrophe Books because I'm a Long Beach native who loves Long Beach's unique and diverse neighborhoods which are improved and even more awesome because of unique, locally owned independents just like us!
My favorite children's book authors are Sendak, Silverstein, and Dahl
Most of our customers own these classics though, so lately I've been recommending Stuck, by Oliver Jeffers or We Are In a Book! by Mo Willems.
For adults I've been recommending Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl and Sharp Objects, both are great reads, and are full of twists and turns.
Also Wild by Cheryl Strayed is a great memoir if you're in the mood to be inspired by a true story.

how long with apostrophe books?  we started apostrophe books in november of 2005 at the paseo colorado mall in pasadena, california
previous bookselling experience? education?   i began my bookselling career at 19 years old with crown books in november of 1980 at the lakewood mall, a long time ago!  in may of 1981, i and my staff transferred to the soon to open long beach crown books location at pch and ximeno, where staples is now.   i managed that store until june of 1989.  after moving to bainbridge island, washington, i worked at a crown books for 2 years just outside of seattle.  then in 1993, valerie and i opened our own store in port townsend, washington, where we had our store, port townsend card company, until may of 2005.  we returned home to long beach and, not being able to find an open space on 2nd street, where we had always wanted our bookstore to be, we opened our store in pasadena.  in 2010, a space opened up in the old hamburger henry's, ritz camera space, where we've been for 3 years now.
my education has been mainly at the bookstore, although i did attend long beach city college on and off for a few years while at crown books.
hobbies? reading, especially book reviews and more book reviews!  we spend a great deal of time looking for interesting books for the store as well as cards and other things made of paper. would love to travel more but, having your own small business requires pretty much daily attention; it's hard to get away.  i like to have dinner with friends and take care of my mom.  i also love, love, love to spend time with our almost 4 year old golden retriever, mason.  he is the light of our lives!
what do you enjoy most about your job at apostrophe books?   i love, love, love interacting with all of our wonderful customers.  in all of my 33 years of bookselling, our customers in belmont shore are, by far, the most interesting and well read.  every day i'm at the store i hear lots of interesting stories and learn something new about our customers.  they are truly grateful that the store is here, and we are truly grateful for all of them.  so many of our customers are familiar and i'm never sure if it's because i went to school with some of them at wilson, knew them from crown books oh so long ago, or they're neighbors now in belmont heights!  every day at the store is an adventure.  many feel like a walk down memory lane.
favorite authors? titles? favorite book to recommend to adults? children?  some of my favorite authors are mark twain, john steinbeck, tich naht hahn, louise hay and the dalai lama. i often recommend the llama llama books for kids, as well as skippyjon jones and pete the cat.  i also love maurice sendak and shel silverstein and recommend their books all day long.  and, of course, dr. seuss!
something interesting or extraordinary about you?
 i don't feel there's anything particularly extraordinary about me....i love being a bookseller, i think i was born to be a bookseller, and nothing makes me happier than to get people the books they are looking for and to see the delight on their faces to have found the perfect book, whether it's for themselves or a gift.
can we put your picture in the newsletter?  i guess so...

previous bookselling experience? education? hobbies?

I began my bookselling career at Crown Books where Lisa Somerville was the Manager - she hired me as seasonal help during the holidays and I ended up staying on permanently until I moved out of state 4 years later. Lisa and I then opened Port Townsend Card Co. in Port Townsend WA. The store began as a greeting card and stationery store, but eventually ended up mainly a bookstore.  In our second year open, we expanded the store from 1000 sq ft to 3500 sq ft to accommodate books.

My education is mainly "life learned/on the job" with some college courses.

As for my hobbies...my biggest passion is gardening - I would garden 24/7 if my body would keep going .. I also love rowing, yoga, my koi pond, going to the movies and of course...reading!

what do you enjoy most about your job at apostrophe books?

Pretty much everything from painting the floor to ordering product to event planning to working with our wonderful staff, and yes, even the bookkeeping ':-0..but most of all I love meeting and talking to our wonderful and loyal customers - without you we (Apostrophe Books)  would not exist. I enjoy seeing the joy on people's faces - especially a child's face - when they have found that special book.

favorite authors? titles? favorite book to recommend to adults? children?

I don't have a favorite author or book...I mainly like reading fiction, but also gardening (of course) and cookbooks. There is a long list of books I would  recommend..so here are just a few..The Bean Trees, The Alchemist,  The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake, Art of Racing In The Rain  (it IS really good!), The Garden Primer, Urban Gardening,  any Water Gardening books!  For pre-teen..any of  Lisa Yee's books ...i.e. Warp Speed, Millicent Min, Girl Genius, etc.  For the younger children - just about any book we have in our children's section - they'll all so fun! Including Dr. Seuss ;-)

What are we reading at Apostrophe Books?

Books and Books...

I just read A Natural History of Dragons:  A Memoir by Lady Trent, by Marie Brennan.  I found it an interesting draconic creation with a likeable heroine willing to question the status quo and follow her passion.  A child intrigued with the flight of her dear sparklings, tiny insect-like garden dragons, she studies their little found cadavers until she is prohibited from doing so as a proper young lady.  Luckily her father understands her better than she knows, and she ultimately finds a suitor who is able to accept her as an intellectual equal, and take her on adventure, dragon hunting! Reading much like a true expedition travelogue, I became so immersed that I dreamed about dragons!  There are lovely dragon drawings, too!
Wishing to know more about Brennan's background I visited her website to learn that she has an archaelogy background, apparent, and an appreciation for other old institutions.  "In general, it is much more beneficial to the author to buy from a bricks-and-mortar store (see this note for why), though a sale of any kind is always good."  Love an author out there speaking up for actual bookstores (and authors)!  Thank you!   - cheenie

Filming The Borderlands Overnight at Apostrophe Books........

Producer Jonathan Levit at Apostrophe Books filming scenes of The Borderlands
Last Saturday night Talking Horse Productions took over the bookstore all night to film some scenes for their short filmThe Borderlands.  Producer Jonathan Levit, is also an actor in the film, as you can see from this shot taken on January 15 at Apostrophe Books.  That night they had some technical difficulties so they had to reschedule for last weekend.  They filmed all through the night, finishing a mere twenty minutes before we opened on Sunday!
Our own Sara was an extra in the film - at least her feet were, as she was the one to stay here all night with them! Levit is pictured holding a copy of Filming Locations in Long Beach, written by Long Beach Press-Telegram columnist and author Tim Grobaty.  For more on Jonathan Levit you can check his website jonathanlevit.com.  Jonathan keeps a log of filming activity at

We were joined by children!  And parents!  We had a ton of fun with authors and illustrators!
"The mantra is draw, floss, and exercise."
L Marantz
Orange county artist and owner of OC Art Studios, Larissa Marantz uses humor, a large drawing board and her fast drawing skills to excite kids with her quick ability to draw recognizable cartoon characters.  She shows the kids not only how much fun drawing can be, but how easy it is to learn to draw. She has inspired many people to grab a pencil and draw along with her.

Alva Sachs
Alva Sachs
Alva Sachs has allowed serendipity to reign in her life, leading her to sixteen years of teaching, a husband, California, and finally, to collaborating on children's books.  She has written three books, I am Five, Circus Fever, and On Your Mark, Get Set, Go!  We are happy to welcome Alva back for this fun event this year!

James Burks
J Burks
"When I'm not drawing, writing, or eating tacos, I'm outside running. (How else can I eat so many tacos?)"
James Burks' bright and humorous style has led him from children's books to tv and animated film.  His latest book Beep and Bah is the adventure of a rambunctious robot and a careful goat on a quest to find a missing sock! He has four others as well, and perhaps he will give us a preview of The Monstore, his next book, coming in June 2013.

Matt B

Returning author Matt Beeuwsaert wrote and illustrated  I Got Game, created after 28 years on the basketball court. Matt has always loved the game and this collection of comic strips gave him the chance to express in an exaggerated way some of the things he experienced as a ball player.  Come meet Zac, a little kid with a big attitude and some skill on the court.

"Writing is the hardest work I've ever done, but by far the most fun."  Valerie Hobbs
Acclaimed author of Sheep, a California Young Reader Medal winner, Hobbs has written over ten novels for young adults.  The sequel to Sheep, Wolf, will be published in September.  From an interview:  "Why do you write?"  "Because I cannot not write. There's a saying I've framed that hangs over my desk: "To be born Welsh is to be born privileged. Not with a silver spoon in your mouth, but with music in your blood and poetry in your soul." It's in me and it's gotta come out."

One way to ensure stores like Apostrophe can last is to teach your kids to love small bookstores, too. Take your child to a bookstore this Saturday!

Visit the official website to see a list of participating bookstores (we're on the list!) and to help spread the word. And click here to read an article in the Christian Science Monitor with a short history of the event.

Join us at 1pm for a very special story time and book signing! Local children's author Elizabeth Gladys Barbieri will be reading from her bilingual book

Book Signing: Tim Grobaty

Writer Tim Grobaty will be joining us for our Holiday Open House, Wednesday, December 12th, from 6 to 8 pm. Tim will be signing copies of his latest book,
Location Filming in Long Beach.
From History Press:
Long Beach's proximity to Hollywood has made the waterfront city a picturesque and easily accessed locale for hundreds of films and television shows. Silent movies produced by Balboa Studios here starred Fatty Arbuckle and Buster Keaton, and the city's résumé includes the Oscar-winning best pictures The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) and American Beauty (1999). Cameras continue to roll in the port metropolis, which has been host for such TV favorites as CHiPs and The Mod Squad and now twenty-first-century series such as NCIS, Dexter and CSI: Miami. Longtime newspaperman Tim Grobaty has been watching, in person and in his living room, and tracks the history of the city on celluloid in the comprehensive Location Filming in Long Beach.

Tim writes about his book and his promotional schedule in this week's column.We're very excited to be a stop on his New World Book Tour!

October Book Club Meeting
Wednesday, October 17th

Our Book Club will meet on October 17th at 7 pm to discuss Tana French's novel The Likeness.

 The Likeness is the second in Tana French's thrilling Dublin Murder Squad series, a gripping collection of psychological novels. Each book is told from the point of view of a different detective; the books can be read in any order. The first book in the series, In the Woods, won the 2007 Edgar award for Best First Novel.

From the goodreads review:
Six months after the events of In the Woods, Detective Cassie Maddox is still trying to recover. She's transferred out of the murder squad and started a relationship with Detective Sam O'Neill, but she's too badly shaken to make a commitment to him or to her career. Then Sam calls her to the scene of his new case: a young woman found stabbed to death in a small town outside Dublin. The dead girl's ID says her name is Lexie Madison (the identity Cassie used years ago as an undercover detective, and she looks exactly like Cassie.

LBPL Budget Cuts
Your voting made a difference!

Margaret Smith, President of the Board of Directors, gives an update on last month's City Council budget vote:

Dear Library Foundation Supporter:

In my August 20 letter, I asked for your help to support the Library by reaching out to your elected officials about the proposed budget cuts. Thank you for your response! It is clear the City Council heard the outpouring of support and voted to make partial restorations to the Library budget. We made a difference.

The remaining cuts are deep and the restorations are limited, but every additional dollar is needed so we are grateful for that. But the Library needs ongoing revenues, not one time restorations, to survive.

Now that the budget is (hopefully) passed, the work is not over. In fact, it is clear our work has just begun. The Foundation intends to initiate an ongoing advocacy effort to involve, inform and educate the City Council and other City officials about the vital role of the Library in our City and the value it provides to our residents. We will start now and not wait until the next budget cycle. Let's face it, the Library will be subject to more cuts and we will be fighting this battle next year, but this is more than just arguing the mechanics of the budget. The Foundation will be the convener and coordinator, but we want this effort  to be "grassroots" and community driven.

We welcome your input, suggestions and participation in this initiative. Please contact Dee Abrahamse at deeabra@gmail.com if you are interested.

Thank you!

Speak Up to Save Long Beach Public Libraries!
Proposed Budget Cuts for 2013

In the August edition of the LBPLF's newsletter, Margaret Smith, President of the Board of Directors, detailed ways the public can help save some Long Beach libraries.   Here is the full text of her letter to the public -- we sincerely hope that everyone will speak up and save our libraries!

The Library Needs Your Help

Mayor Foster presented the proposed 2013 City budget on August 1. It closes a $17.2 million deficit by calling for major reductions in many City departments, including a $1.26 million reduction to the Long Beach Public Library budget. The City Council can alter this proposed budget and must approve the final version by September 15. The full budget document is available at www.longbeach.gov.

The mission of the Long Beach Public Library Foundation is "to provide support to enhance the Long Beach Public Library and to encourage literacy and education for all members of the community." So we are very concerned about the impact of these proposed budget cuts on the Library and the residents it serves. As a distinguished member of our community, we appreciate your support of the Library Foundation as an Advisory Board member.

We ask for your help to speak out on behalf of the Library and tell the City Council members how you feel about the impact these cuts will have on our City.

The Foundation supports the need to balance the budget and knows the Library must take its share of cuts. We applaud all the departments that share our goal to make Long Beach a great city in which to live and work. The Library budget is only 3% of the General Fund, costing each Long Beach household only 86 cents per month. Yet it provides vital community services to over 1.3 million visitors per year, keeping kids off the street and out of gangs, giving access to technology and computers which most of us take for granted, and adding economic value in the form of increased property values, workforce expansion and business development to the entire community.

The proposed cuts to the Library include:
  1. Reductions in staffing, programming and hours at Main Library
  2. Reductions in staffing at Harte and Twain branch libraries
  3. Reductions to Citywide materials budgets and Youth Services     discretionary funds
  4. Conversion of six branch libraries (Alamitos, Bach, Brewitt, Dana, Los Altos and Bay Shore) to "self-service" facilities
We want to make smart cuts that minimize the impact on the patrons that depend on the Library for many services. So we accept reductions 1-3 above. But we are VERY CONCERNED about the conversion of six branch libraries to "self-service". The Library embraces technology and the use of volunteers. But a "self-service" library, with only one librarian and one clerk for the entire facility, is not a sustainable model for a neighborhood library. A library is not just a warehouse of books: our branch libraries provide materials lending, reference searches, research guidance, homework help, job and resume assistance, technology and computer classes, children's story times, school class visits, children's craft activities, adult and children's summer reading programs, book clubs, community meeting space, digital archiving, fine processing, DVD rentals, community classes, language learning classes, teen programming and film showings. In the "self-service" model, because of limited staffing, most of that goes away. The Family Learning Centers, located in these libraries, will likely close as well.

The new "self-service" library will only check out materials, answer reference questions and provide limited computer access. Many of our patrons cannot "self-serve". This model unfairly targets patrons who struggle with English, disabled patrons, seniors and our children and teens, who no longer have school libraries to use. The ability of librarians to mentor and assist patrons young and old, and therefore the ability of patrons to effectively take advantage of resources, services and programs, will be lost with "self-service" libraries. It will leave large sections of the city (most of the east side) without a full service library in their neighborhood. And it presents safety issues for both the limited staff and our patrons.

What we are asking from the City Council is to implement the "self-service" model only at Alamitos, Bach and Brewitt, to test the impact of this model before implementing at Bay Shore, Dana and Los Altos. $392,471 is needed to do that - to keep the last 3 libraries as full service facilities.

To help the Library we ask you to:

1. Contact the Mayor and your City Council member by email, phone, fax or letter to tell him/her your opinion about these cuts. They value the opinions of their constituents. You can find all the contact information at www.longbeach.gov

2. Go to www.longbeach.gov/budgetchallenge to voice your concerns and explore budget decisions the City Council will be making.

3. Attend the Budget Hearings where public input is welcomed: September 4 (3:30 and 7 pm) and September 11 (3:30 and 7 pm) at City Hall. There are also Community Budget Meetings by District -  go to www.longbeach.gov to get the dates, times and locations.

Please encourage any of your friends, neighbors, colleagues, members of your book club, neighborhood association, and anyone who loves books and libraries to voice their opinions. You are welcome to forward this email to them.

We are hoping our supporters will contact the City Council members and Mayor by SEPTEMBER 5so there will be time to process that input before the final budget deadline September 15. Even though the City Charter gives the Council until September 15, it is possible the final budget will be adopted at the September 11 Budget Hearing.

Long Beach is a great city and it needs and deserves a great Library.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!

September Book Club Meeting
Wednesday, September 12th

Our Book Club will meet on September 12th at 6:30 pm to discuss Barbara Kingsolver's novel Prodigal Summer.

From the goodreads review:
Barbara Kingsolver's fifth novel is a hymn to wildness that celebrates the prodigal spirit of human nature, and of nature itself. It weaves together three stories of human love within a larger tapestry of lives amid the mountains and farms of southern Appalachia. Over the course of one humid summer, this novel's intriguing protagonists face disparate predicaments but find connections to one another and to the flora and fauna with which they necessarily share a place.

Paperback editions of Prodigal Summer are available in the store now, at 15% for book club members.

If you'd like to join us on September 12th, please RSVP by emailing Patti.

Newsletter                                        July 18, 2012
Happy Summer!

We've had some terrific events around Long Beach in the last few weeks: library events with writers Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston (Farewell to Manzanar) and Brett Mizelle (Pig), plus TEDxSoCal!  Be sure to check out all of the pictures from each of these events!

On Saturday, July 21st, we will have a very special story time and book signing with local author Cathy Larson! Cathy will be reading from her delightful book The Dream Train, and then she and illustrator Jamie Meckel Tablason will sign copies for fans. See below for details!

We'll be hosting a book signing for Medium Geof Jowett at our store on Thursday, July 26th, and he will be available for private spiritual readings on Wednesday and Thursday (July 25 and 26) -- details are in this newsletter.

Our book club for adults is reading Gabrielle Hamilton's memoir, Blood, Bones & Butter.  We'll be meeting July 25th to discuss it; see below for details if you'd like to join us!

If you are a student with a summer reading list, chances are pretty great that we have your books in the store!  We assembled lists from students and teachers all around Long Beach, and we stocked up on the assigned titles.  If we don't have your book, we'll order it for you, and most titles arrive within 48 hours -- and all our books are at least 10% off, every day!  Give us a call (562.438.7950), email us, or stop in the store to get your summer reading today!

Happy reading!

July Book Club Meeting
Wednesday, July 25th

Our Book Club will meet on July 25th at 7 pm to discuss Gabrielle Hamilton's memoir, Blood, Bones & Butter.
In Blood, Bones & Butter, writer and chef Gabrielle Hamilton gives us the sort of hard-edged restaurant memoir we've come to expect from fellow New York chefs like Anthony Bourdain (who described Hamilton's book as "simply the best memoir by a chef. Ever.").  But it's also the story of a young girl confused by her parents' sudden divorce, who turned to a life of crime and, perhaps even more perilous, restaurant work.

Paperback editions of Blood, Bones & Butter are available in the store now, at 15% for book club members.

Farewell to Manzanar

Jeanne Houston spoke to a full house at the LBPL's Main Library Auditorium on July 7th!  Her talk and question-and-answer session with the audience was both  thought-provoking and touching. Farewell to Manzanar is a beautiful memoir, rich with detail, and Jeanne's discussion made those details come alive.  We are very happy to have been part of this special Library event.

After the event, Jeanne signed copies of Farewell to Manzanar, and we have some available for purchase at the store -- at 10% off, every day!

Booked! with Brett Mizelle
Backyard BBQ and book discussion

Last Sunday we were thrilled to be part of the festivities at the latest LBPLF unique literary event, Booked!  Every Booked! dinner is fascinating, and this was no exception. Our hostsRick Alsagoff and Bruce Alton graciously opened their backyard for an afternoon of fantastic food and great conversation!  Professor Mizelle shared some interesting details from his book Pig, and we will never look at the animal or the food the same way!  With their beautiful gardens, pool, chicken coops, and bee hives as backdrop, we enjoyed a delicious meal of pulled pork, beans, cole slaw, potato salad, and, for dessert -- lemon bars made with lemons from their own trees and eggs from their chickens!
Signed copies of Pig are now available at the store (at 10% off).  We are working on planning an event in the Fall with Brett and Annie Potts, writer of another book in the Reaktion Animal series, Chicken.  Stay tuned for details!

Remembering Nora Ephron
1941 - 2012

Nora Ephron passed away last week after a long battle with cancer. Her movies and her books have entertained and enlightened us for decades, and we were deeply saddened by the news. We will miss her wit and wisdom.

We'd like to share one of our favorite Nora Ephron quotes, from her 2006 memoir I Feel Bad About My Neck:

"Reading is everything. Reading makes me feel like I've accomplished something, learned something, become a better person. Reading makes me smarter. Reading gives me something to talk about later on. Reading is the unbelievably healthy way my attention deficit disorder medicates itself. Reading is escape, and the opposite of escape; it's a way to make contact with reality after a day of making things up, and it's a way of making contact with someone else's imagination after a day that's all too real. Reading is grist. Reading is bliss."

  • Hire extra staff! We would love to bring in an Events Coordinator, an Office Assistant, and two or three more Sales Associates.
  • Be more involved in our community! We will be able to take on more fundraisers for schools, libraries and other organizations.
  • Host more special events at our store! We could add weekly story time, additional book clubs, bigger author events, and much, much more!
  • Increase and diversify our inventory! Some of our book sections need expanding, and we could  add magazines and periodicals to our stock.
And this is just the beginning! Invest in your community and vote for Apostrophe Books!

Voting is very easy!  Clicking this link will take you to the Mission: Small Business

June Book Club Meeting
June 27th, 6:30 pm

Aimee Bender will be joining us for our June discussion of her novel The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake! Aimee will join us by phone (or possibly Skype, if the technology gods cooperate) from 7 pm to 8 pm on June 27th.

From the Good Reads review:

"On the eve of her ninth birthday, unassuming Rose Edelstein bites into her mother's homemade lemon-chocolate cake and discovers she has a magical gift: she can taste her mother's emotions in the slice. To her horror, she finds that her cheerful mother tastes of despair. Soon, she's  privy to the secret knowledge that most families keep hidden: her father's detachment, her mother's transgression, her brother's increasing retreat from the world. But there are some family secrets that even her cursed taste buds can't discern."

Paperback editions of Lemon Cake are available in the store (many copies are autographed!).  This book is 15% off for Book Club members. Please print this notice and bring it with you to get your special discount!

We'll gather in the room above our store around 6:30 pm on Wednesday, June 27th.  We'll have wine and snacks (I think cake will be necessary!) to complement the discussion.

Please email Patti to RSVP if you'd like to join us on June 27th!
